-> Honey

-> Hot fluids

A cough can also be treated with hot liquids such as hot water, chicken soup, miso soup and tea. Coughing individuals are typically dehydrated and should drink plenty of fluids to hydrate and boost their immune systems. Dryness in the throat, a major cause of coughing, can be alleviated by drinking fluids. Additionally, it aids in the thinning of mucus, which can relieve coughing and congestion. Ensure the beverages are at room temperature or warmer, and this may not only alleviate a cough but also a runny nose and sneezing.

-> Gargling saltwater

If using the shower is not possible, you can place your head over a bowl of hot water.

-> Lozenges & hard candy

Lozenges and hard candies help stimulate saliva or enhance saliva discharge, which can help suppress a cough. For moist coughs, you can get horehound sweets in drugstores. The bittersweet herb horehound functions as an expectorant, stimulating the cough reflex and aiding in the expulsion of mucus. Use slippery elm lozenges for coughs that are dry. Made from the bark of the slippery elm tree, these were historically essential components of the medicine chest. The slippery elm has a gel-like material that covers the throat and reduces coughing.

Not able to find slippery elm lozenges in your house? Any hard candy is enough to suffice a dry cough as it boosts saliva production and promotes swallowing, thus reducing coughing. Lemon drops are very effective for moist coughs.

When to seek a doctor

The majority of coughs resolve on their own within a week to ten days. Consult a doctor if your cough lasts longer than two weeks or if you cough up blood.

Coughing may indicate a more serious condition, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) or asthma.
